Abdias Zambrano

ISOC Panama, Panama

I studied Law and Political Science at the Catholic University Santa Maria La Antigua in Panama City, with an International Diploma in Human Rights and Conventionality Control and a Masters in Public Policy Management at ADEN University, with a double degree from EUNCET Business School of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Spain and certifications from The George Washington University in Washington D.C. through a scholarship granted by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. I am currently studying a specialization in higher education.
I have complemented courses related to internet governance and human rights too.

Fellow Report:

The 19th European Summer School on Internet Governance is a unique experience, no matter where you come from. This extraordinary opportunity is offered once a year in Meissen, a small but charming city in Germany. For me, coming from a large capital in Central America, it was a fantastic place to learn in a safe and relaxed environment.

The School and the fellows’ participation begin a few weeks before going to Meissen, when we receive our acceptance email as fellows, in my case with full funding. For me, these types of opportunities are unique, as there are no studies of this type in my country or region.

The first day on-site, we began with a pleasant dinner, preparing for our first class. On Monday morning, we began with a bit of history about how internet governance and other related topics, including geopolitics, have evolved in recent years and the challenges we face as humanity when using technology in all aspects of our lives. During this day, we also presented our weekly talks on the WSIS process, presenting group feedback.

The second day, which was my favorite, began with Professor Tatiana Tropina of the Internet Society. Her talk, on cybersecurity and cybercrime, highlighted the differences between the terms and how diplomacy and international documents have built international regulation that affects our countries and our future.

Throughout the rest of the week, other interesting topics such as artificial intelligence, emerging technologies like quantum and neurotechnology will be incorporated into our curriculum.

Another feature that distinguishes this school is the diversity of students from different backgrounds, which diversifies their perspectives and contributions.

As Panama’s ISOC chapter President and Coordinator of the Youth Panamanian IGF NRI, I took every class as an opportunity of replicating this kind of opportunities and contents in my home country.
